March 2026 Fly of the Month: Ice Lady

Fly of the Month Submitted by Karen Schneck

Recipe:

Thread: UTC 140

Hook: Hook streamer or nymph # 10

Silver Bead Size 5/32"

3 Ice Dubs in color of choice (light, medium, and dark colors)

Krystal flash

Rooster Saddle Patch

Step-by-Step

Step 1

Place the bead on hook and then load into vise. Wrap thread on and make close touching wraps along the entire hook shank.

Step 2

Tie in two pieces of Krystal Flash to make the tail. Trim tail to desired length (usually the length of the hook shank).

Step 3

Take a small amount of dubbing and create a dubbing noodle by working your fingers in the same direction down the thread. Apply dubbing to ⅓ of the fly. OR Create a dubbing loop. Put small spread out pieces of dubbing between the thread and twist the loop until a cohesive piece is formed. You can use hackle pliers to make it easier to grip the loop and wrap it around the hook.

Step 4

Apply next two dubbings in the same way, creating an even color gradient.

Step 5

Tie in one feather from a rooster saddle patch. Make 2-3 turns with the feather and tie off.

Step 6

Whip finish or half hitch finish.
